Brazilian dental floss or fio dentalAs a young woman and habitual traveler to developing countries, I have always made a point to be keenly aware of local customs and norms when it comes to my wardrobe.  It is, after all, the smartest thing to do isn’t it?

Every travel guidebook strongly suggests this course of action for female travelers.  Attract as little attention to yourself as possible so as not to be an obvious target for those who wish to rob you or worse.  Although it goes against the biological desire of a female to be noticed, it is generally sound advice that you should always adhere to.

At times, especially in machismo cultures, local suitors can actually be more frightening than flattering.  In countries like Egypt, attention from the opposite sex can be extremely unnerving.

During my visit to the land of the Pharaohs, my rear end was groped as I was “helped” into taxis, I was regularly bombarded with excessively crude comments, and no one seemed able to resist touching my golden curls which stood out like a sore thumb.

Even though it is highly inappropriate for Muslim men to behave this way towards their own women, thanks to the world-wide distribution of western cinema and television, Egyptians feel confident that we enjoy being manhandled and treated as sex objects because we are often portrayed that way on the big screen.  Needless to say, it was in Egypt that I truly learned to appreciate the art of blending in.

I am not suggesting that you dress exactly as local women do, just with similar modesty.  After I ditched my shorts and tank tops in the sweltering Egyptian desert, I still did not cover every square inch of my body as do many of the Muslim women.  I did, however, try to cover my knees, my shoulders and eventually I tucked my hair away when visiting the more rural areas.

In the same vain, when I traveled through the Andes in Peru, I came across many villages where the indigenous cultures still hold sway.  While I did not wear the traditional clothing with layer upon layer of hand woven garments like the women of the region, I still tried to respect the modesty of their culture.

One experience after another has reinforced the advice of the guidebooks:  “Dress as the locals do!”  This, of course, was the exact advice I received again while preparing for a recent trip to Brazil.

Obviously, I had heard about the tight clothes and the barely-there bikinis of the Brazilian beaches, but I was not at all prepared for the way in which the entire society abides by the “less is more” philosophy of dress.

Brazilian women wear clothes that are ridiculously small and tight-fitting regardless of their age, shape or size.  They dress with complete confidence in every square inch of their bodies.  It was very empowering to witness at times, yet somewhat disturbing at others.

Even the most petite women are literally popping out of their shirts and rolling out of their shorts.  No matter how small a woman may be, if she wears an article of clothing three sizes too small for her – some overspill will occur.  It’s just fashion physics.

I thought I could slip through the cracks without being noticed, but I was bringing a great deal of attention to myself with my simple T-shirts and loose Capris.  I was obviously a stranger in a strange land committing the cardinal sin of travel safety.

This was the most apparent at the beach where I felt like a spotlight was shining on me in my one-piece bathing suit.  Full-coverage swimwear seems to be an unheard of style.

My husband kept reminding me of my own advice. “Don’t you always say that it is safest to dress as the locals do?” he giggled as he prodded me to try on some of the more revealing local bathing suits.

I promptly reminded him that his long swimming trunks were also a source of unwanted attention.  Perhaps if he donned a sexy Speedo we would seem less conspicuous as well.  He stopped teasing me shortly thereafter.

Perhaps I just could not shake the puritan heritage of my American ancestors, but I simply could not bring myself to dress the part during my two month visit to Brazil. Actually, I don’t think it was my prudence that kept me from doing so.  It was simply a matter of logistics.

I am a full-bodied, full-breasted girl, and my supportive under-wire bra consists of more cloth than most of the things that pass for blouses in Brazilian department stores.

If I were to wear a true Brazilian wardrobe, I am afraid that too many innocent bystanders would be hurt in the process and I am not prepared to have that on my conscience.  Whatever my excuse, I just could not do it.  So for the first time, I decided to break the golden rule and I stuck to my wardrobe from home.

So to all my sisters in travel, I leave you with this piece of advice: When in Rome, dress as the Romans dress.  However, if your Rome happens to be anywhere in Brazil, be it beach or mountain, rural or urban, north or south, you’d be well advised to pack your own toga if you are uncomfortable bearing it all.

I hope you enjoyed Brasil Ms. Crow. As you found out, Brasilian culture does indeed encourage women of all ages to enjoy there wonderful sensuality. While some my think this unacceptable, it has been this way for many, many years. It is indeed quite a contrast to Brasil's strong cathloic hertiage, and while the Christian and Evangelical churches have made "progress", our culture continues to revolve around "beauty"...and it starts, unfortunatly at a very young age, where children, miss much of their childhood. This culture has led to huge industry, where Brasil is a leading world market, for cosmetic surgury, cosmetics, shoes and clothing, as well as beauty treatments of all types. The good news is that most people try amd maintain a healthy lifestyle, watch what they eat and excersice, the bad news is that per capita, Brasil is a leading consumer of anti-depressents. Women have made some good strides in Brasil, mostly in the life sciences and medicine, we have women leading some of our largest cities, but women are still exploited in a country where beauty comes fist. I am sure we drive leading feminists crazy.

" the bad news is that per capita, Brasil is a leading consumer of anti-depressents"

Not to get too off topic, but is this true?

Have you considered the "Rita Lee" look? She is kind of like a female John Lennon. You would still look Brazilian, but not exposed.
Brazilians are the World\'s
written by Guest, 2005-02-20 10:46:17
Most beautiful people so it's only natural that they flaunt it. Personally I find Brazilian society to place less emphasis on beauty than American society with it's obsession with being tall, blonde and thin. Of course I noticed that most Brazilian models are the blonde types but I found the mocha skinned, tall, darkhaired beauties to be the most fascinating.

I love the relaxed Brazilian way of life as opposed to the anal way that most Americans act. Furthermore most of the Viagra and Prozac are sold to Americans because of the messed up culture full of hangups

brazil doesnt have the most beautiful people in the planet

that is such a stupid pseudo nationalist comment

go to rio's favelas, or rocinha in sao paulo and see the thousands of really ugly people

beautiful people can be found any freaking where

and all that happines and openess is not only common in brazil but pretty much in all of those tropical latin countries.

i could name you several countries in the world where i saw women way hotter than brazilian women
Now that\'s Beauty!
written by Guest, 2005-02-20 14:58:31
The beauty of the Brazilian people lies inside and exudes on out. Funny how people who undergo so much (like mentioned above - rio's favelas or rocinhas in SP) can still laugh and open up a big smile. Well, nothing is more beautiful than that. And that is why it could be said that Brazilians are [perhaps] the most beautiful people. Peace!

I have been to Rio 2 times and I am going back again, I did not ever have any problem at all. I love the people, the food, all it has to offer.

I am American, and I love Brazil, the women are very beautiful, and have always been a lot of fun. People that I met there were very helpful and fun.
full bodied
written by Guest, 2005-02-20 23:23:24
Kori Crow claims that she is full bodied and that is why a clothing that is smaller than her body would normally wear would be more embarassing. I think this is the key point in her article. Seems better to wear something that makes you comforatable and while a smaller bathing suit may make some women comfortable if the same woman is generously endowed in certain areas the level os "smallness" should be reduced or maybe written off alltogether. All this to say wear what amkes you feel best and if it makes you feel best to fit in do that and prepare for the consequnces, study the consequences and make a plan how to best avoid them or minimize them ( a very stern look from a very sexy woman would frightem most egyptians specially coming from a blond). By that way if you want to go to a bar in rio where famlies gather, singles gather, conservatives and liberlas gather in all kinds of attire and nobody gropes anyone else i suggest this place www.bracarense.com.br
I suggest arriving at 4 in the afternoon, having some bolinhos de bacalhau or bolinhos de aipim, and just relaxing.

Come on
written by Guest, 2005-02-21 07:01:13
Why even post a blog like this. One, "full bodied" gringo comes here and is uncomfortable with how women dress and it's worth an article on this website? Please... I'll bet she would be uncomfortable in South Beach, Malibu, or Panama Beach as well. I recently returned from a trip to the US, and US women themselves, sometimes ufortunatly so, attempt to dress in clothes "3 times too small". People in Brasil come in all shapes and sizes, but our culture is one where taking care of yourself does matter. I will argue with the one poster who says the our women "are not that hot", I think anyone who knows Brasil, also knows that our women are among the most beautifiul in the world. Why be ahsamed of it...in fact when I am on the beach, or in a bar, I am pretty damn happy about it. We welcome visitors from all over the world, it is to bad that the author was so uncomfortable, it was unnecessary as we make every effort to make our visiting friends feel comfortable, no matter what their apperance.

come on people grow up

there is nothing more annoying than one of those brazil obssesed americans!!!

i have been all over latin america, and trust me people, every where you go in latin america, you see these open attitudes, and people of all shapes sizes and colors, etc. that is not a uniquely brazilian quality!

another dumb claim is brazilians are the most beautiful women in the world, please!!!
lots of beautiful women in other countries who are not brazilian.
and lots of really ugly gargoyle looking brazilians too.

these people make it sound as if every single brazilian woman out there was a victoria secret's model material, while the chicks in the rest of the world were average women who would be lucky to slightly look like an average brazilian

I agree with the poster above, i could name a few countries, in europe, SOUTH AMERICA, asia, and even africa where I saw women on average better looking than in Brazil.

I Still Say Brazilians are the
written by Guest, 2005-02-21 16:46:41
most beautiful people in the world in terms of numbers and I am not even Brazilian, I am American and I am not a man but a woman. The women of Salvador and Rio had us beat. Yes there are beautiful people in every country but Brazil has MORE than her share of them. In other countries you only see people as beautiful as Brazilians on magazine covers and billboards but in Brazil you see them on the streets, on the beaches, in the malls, every freaking where you look.

And I am not talking just about the blonde Brazilians, I am talking about the lovely cafe au lait, mocha, chocolate, golden skinned people some with striking green or grey eyes.

Say what you will, anybody who has been to Brazil KNOW that they have far more than their share of gorgeous people.
The Favelas are Included Too
written by Guest, 2005-02-21 16:50:54
I saw many gorgeous people in the favelas, not just on the beaches of the South Zone. The people of Salvador, supposedly one of Brazil's poorest regions, seemed to have the most physically attractive, gorgeous people. Hell the entire state of Bahia was full of beauty. I noticed that tourists were nearly having heart attacks watching the beautiful bahianas stroll on by.

Yes there were some less than perfect ones but a good number of them had Victoria Secret model looks and there were a lot of gorgeous physically fit men - young and old.

AMERICANS ARE SO f**kING STUPID, ANY ONE CAN LOOK BETTER THAN AMERICANS

AND THEN THEY GO TO BRAZIL, A COUNTRY THAT HONESTLY ISNT MUCH!! AND GET ALL OVERWHELMED BECAUSE THEY FIND A COUNTRY WITH THINNER, AND MUCH MORE CULTURAL PEOPLE, THAT IN THEIR ACULTURAL AMERICAN s**tHOLE, AND GO BACK TO THE USA, ALL OBSSESED ABOUT BRAZIL THINKING THAT BRAZIL IS GOD'S MOST PERFECT CREATION

SORRY TO BURST YOUR BUBLE, BUT ANY ONE CAN LOOK HOTTER THAN AMERICANS, AMERICANS HAVE SUCH A SIMPLETON CULTURE, NOT T MENTION HOW GRUESOME SOME AMERICAN WOMEN LOOK.

THE HOTTEST MEN I'VE SEE, I SAW THEM IN ARGENTINA, AND THE HOTTEST CHICKS I SAW THEM IN SPAIN OR ITALY

ARGENTINA has the hottest people in latin america, I agree with the poster above!!

Is funny how an Argentinian man in brazil can f**k all the chicks he wants, but a Brazilian man in Argentina is usually considered a no no by the hot argentinian women.

Argentinians are a nice mixture of the best looking people in Europe, the Spaniards, and the Italians.

so that is a plus, I agree with the poster above.
The American Woman Still Says
written by Guest, 2005-02-21 17:40:34
Brazilians have more than their fair share. I've been to a good number of places on the planet, not all but quite a few and Brazil wins hands down. The Argentines were just average looking. They can't hold a candle to Brazil. I've been to Spain and I've been to Italy and the people are attractive but not as attractive as the Portuguese. I've seldom met an Argentine man over 5 feet tall and the women wear too much damn makeup plus they are always bragging about their "pure" white heritage as if that gives them an edge over Brazil. The best looking Europeans are the true Nordic blondes not the fake bleached blonde Argentine women who wish they had natural blonde hair and blue eyes.

Brazil wins hands down.
You got that right!
written by Guest, 2005-02-21 17:44:58
I agree with the poster who stated that Americans are so "f**king stupid." True, true, true, Thank God you don't have to live in America with all of it's fat, unhappy people full of racial/sexual hangups.

When some of us get to Brazil it's such JOY to be around beautiful happy smiling people. So if we go ooh and aah and ooh and aah about the Brazilians you can understand why. Everything you say about America and Americans is true. Now you can understand why some of us love Brazil. Argentina is just another fake assed America with a bunch of "whiter than thou" folks wanna be Aryan blondes. However, even they are not full of the serious racial/sexual hangups of most Americans.
columbia and venezuela
written by Guest, 2005-02-21 18:15:19
you know a pair of south american countries (since we're talking about south americans here) where I saw really good looking people, especially drop dead gorgeous women, was in columbia and venezuela, i would dare to say they look hotter than in brazil or argentine, but once again, beauty is on the eyes of the beholder

some of my co workers tell me that brazilian women and south american women in general are horrible, but is because they are into this tiny, boyish looking japanese chicks.

and if you're into the blonde haired, blue eyed escandinavian chick, then brazil or south america in general is not the place for you., maybe with the exception of chile, you're better off in germany or norway or holland

Brazilian women, in my opinion looked like the women you see anywhere!! some ugly, some pretty, some not so pretty, some gorgeous, some absolutely nasty looking, come on people, countries are just countries!!!

visit the world a little and stop this dumb comparisons!!! and broad generalizations!! of people, brazil has 200 million people, i am sure you have never had the chance to meet not every single one of them, nor you have had the chance to meet all of the 6 billion ihabitants of the planet and their respective countries

let's be less ignorant in our comments, and less generalizing, brazil has is ups and downs!! brazil is not God gift to men!! I have been to plenty of countries where I really had fun and loved, even far more than Brazil

so let's stop this hateful silly ocmparisons, OH BRAZILIANS ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL, OH AMERICANS ARE THE MOST RACITS, OH JAPANESE ARE THE MOST THIS, OH GHANIANS ARE THE MOST THAT

let's be a little more cosmopolitan!!!

regarding the brazilian women being the hottest in the world, i wouldnt say that, i've seen a lot of hot women in other countries, and in good quantity too.

Kari Crow of course considers as "brazilians" the cariocas... well, I got news for her. In many other brazilian states, brazilians do not wear such small clothing. Her husband would be perfectly blended in a Rio Grande do Sul or Santa Catarina beach, where VERY FEW men wear speedos... most wear knee lenght shorts (bermudas). And thongs in Rio Grande do Sul are much larger than in Rio de Janeiro...
Groping Or Mugging ?

From experience let me share that if there is unwanted physical contact in Rio, better check your ID and credit card before your butt or your boobs. More likely you've just been mugged or pick-pocketed by some young pivete who is more interested in expensive loot than a cheap thrill!

A closer look
written by Guest, 2005-02-21 21:55:54
Looks like i will be forced to bring some perspective into the thread.

1. Brazil is the country that has the largest diversity among its population in south america.
While the european element in both brazil, argentina, uruguay and chile is made of of basically southern europeans ( portuguese, italian, spanish) Brazil is the only country of these that has a SUBSTANTIAL northern european population. Mainly germans . Central europeans like polish and ucranian also can be found in large numbers. These can be found in chile and argentina but not to the point found in brazil where whole regions and towns were founded and whose population belongs in their majority to these groups.
Brazil also has an african heritage and an indian heritage and holds the worlds largest overseas lebanese and japonese populations outside of lebanon and japan.
All this in my opinion makes brazil along with the united states the richest countries in the new world and perhaps in the whole world concerning diversity amongst its population.
Argentina may be to brazil what canada is to the united states. Argentina has a more homogenous population than brazil . The same way, but to a lesser degree, that canada has to the united states. The interesting observation about argentina is that it isnt really a "WHITE" nation in its majority like Canada is. Most of the Argentine population is made up of people of spanish, indian and italian ancestry and a mix between these three. It is interesting to note that italians and spainairds are not really white since both of these populations have an enormous amount of north african and arab blood. One can for example clearly see the difference between the average argentine and the brazilian of german ancestry in south brazil just to keep the example in south america. The same diference can be seen between a brazilian from blumenau to a brazilian from an italian town in brazil like nova trento.
What is interesting here, if not sad, is that the average argentine who is refered to as a "cabecita" ( dark, italian, indian spanish" ancestry) claims to be white, the brazilian of italian ancestry claims the same thing and these two groups frown upon blacks. Jesus, both italian and spanish and portuguese had enormous amount o african blood in them before arriving to the new world as immigrants. Do they think this just dissapeared when they landed in the new world? It all seems silly to me. I am a brazilian of german ancestry and it seems that everyone wants to look like the people from germany or northern europe in south america. I feel sorry for the argentines because they have an inferiority complex that they try to hide with a rude behavior yet a closer look will reveal a sense of insecurity among them. I feel equally sorry for my fellow brazilians who canԴt seem to notice many times ( although there are exceptions) that a country like ours is hard to find in this planet. Few countries have cities like nova, hamburgo, nova trento, blumenau at the same time also have salvador, recife, fortaleza who boast a completly diferent background. Not to mention the indian populations in the amazon and an confederate american population in the state of so paulo even. My advice is to relax and enjoy all this. Do not allow other peoples insecurities to get in the way of apreciating such wealth.

Back to the original article: Kori Crow's comment about traveling in Egypt-- "...after I ditched my shorts and tank tops..."--betrays a stunning ignorance in someone who supposedly "travels extensively in the developing world..."

Please explain to me why you would have worn shorts and tank tops anywhere in Egypt in the first place, if you had taken the time to learn anything at all about the country (you clearly didn't). I've never been there, but even I can tell you that that isn't acceptable.

You don't have to travel the world to know that cultures exist that require modesty of dress of their people (especially of their women) and of those visiting them. ANY reputable, widely available travel book will tell you this.

Kori, you obviously didn't consult any travel books before you left for "the developing world" (I object to the term, but that's another debate entirely), or if you did, you didn't absorb what was in them. The fact that you consider yourself extensively traveled in the "developing world" scares me.

I lived in Florida for six years, DC for 3 years. I have four brothers who lived in different places in the US for varying amounts of time (Florida, Washington DC and state, New York, Pennsylvania and others) my father lived in the US for decades teaching at different universities and just about anyone else in my family has at one point or another lived in the US...

And we all came back. You make more money in the US but the rule is within 3 months to 1 year you'll start bitching how every sucks, from the DNV to meat to ppl being rude ad infinitum. One way or another everyone comes back eventually.

In regards to this whole who has better women I must say Im biased towards home. I've travelled a lot and at least I have found that brasilian women wear the least makeup and look best. Argentinians arent bad but they have this gigantic inferiority complex and try to act like they're European for some insane reason.

And to the the man who said Gwyneth Paltrow was pretty... wtf??? *vomits* are you on crack? Giselle is a freakin godess and she doesn't whore herself like Ms. Aguillera. But if you consider Gwyneth Paltrow to be pretty then your tastes must be horribly warped anywyas.

Way to go "vikinggirl"! I had the same reaction. I am no world travelor. I learned quite easily though how to merge quietly into the city of Sao Paulo without being identified in any way as a Gringo, - unless I openned my mouth. I am afraid the author of the original article betrayed a woeful lack of knowledge by her dress in a Moslem country and by her silly notion that the only two options in Rio were dressing like the North American country club set or taking off her clothing. Such foolishness. Sometimes it is not so much what you take with you when you travel (clothing) but what you leave behind, (American preconceptions!)
Whatever

I happen to know that anyone who travels takes along his or her "preconceptions" because that is who they are. It doesn't matter what country or subculture, it matters what WHO you are, and if Kori (who by the way is from Texas where it is the norm to wear tank tops and shorts because of the extensive heat) wants to wear her normal "diggs"...she shouldn't be berated when she finally realizes that it would be prudent of her to fit in a little better. Y'all are just like the French...if you can't fit in with us you should be shot! Kori thought she would share her opinions and findings with some of us...well, you go girl! I don't see any of us getting published!!!
Learn a lesson.......

"As a young woman and habitual traveler to developing countries, I have always made a point to be keenly aware of local customs and norms when it comes to my wardrobe. It is, after all, the smartest thing to do isn’t it? "

Obviously Ms. Crow is still learning her way around local customs and norms. Good for her that she eventually catches on. Many don't. Unfortunately the image of the "ugly American" is someone who invariably by their loud voice, inappropriate dress, or arrogant behavior gets them inevitably noticed in other countries and cultures. Ms. Crow certainly does not seem like one of those. However, being "from Texas" is no excuse for either grossly (even if unintentionally) in these days mis-dressing in a Moslem country or seeing the only dress alternatives in Rio as a prude or a prostitute. These kind of misjudgements don't happen when someone is " keenly aware," but rather with a growing awareness from making mistakes by not understanding the nuances of local customs and norms in wardrobe. AND, by the way.... American men who travel also need to learn as much from her assertions as from her mistakes!

I have been to Rio twice and I think it is a shame that people from Brazil and America (in this forum) can't just stop firing at one another. America has a number of wonderful places and people and so does Brazil, so why not just try to get on and respect each other.

We are all different and no nation is particularly better than the next. If an American is brought up in Brazil from an early age and acts like a Brazilian, is he or she good or bad? If a Brazilian says good, remember that he or she is American, if they say bad, remember it is the Brazilian upbringing that shaped their ways. The point is that it is the culture and not the person which you are really judging.

For this world to move forward, we need more maturity and less aggressive and blameful culture. I believe in an open world, so feel free to belittle my words above, however, my purpose is only to influence a more positive environment.

For the record, I am neither American nor Brazilian, as I come from London, England. My favourite countries for anyone who is interested (not for any superior reasons) are America, Brazil, and Japan - each has so much to learn and also offer.

I had the pleasure of visiting Brazil(Rio and Salvador) for three weeks in 2003. And I agree with the author. Since beauty is truley in the eye of the beholder. I'll talk about the great shape the brazilian people are in. What amazed me was not the cloths or beach wear that the brazilians wore but the fact that they were in good enough shape to wear them! I saw countless women with several kids in tow on the beach with 2 piece thong bikini's. Bodies that would make any 20 year old american proud. I was so inspired that I hit the gym a week after getting back to philadelphia and haven't look back since!

Well I have been to Brazil, being brutally honest i didnt think brazilian women were all that

but once again im not into latin women, especially brasileiras who are kind of overrated to the stupid freaking americans, who act like childs when they see a bikini.

the girl who claimed bahians are the hottest people in the world, and that you're an american woman

HMMM i find that hard to believe, you know why? because I am anthropologist and I can tell you narrate bahia from a very brazilian point of view, if you were american like you said you were , you would have said that bahianos have a very colorful african influence, leaving the portuguese euro heritage unnoticed due to the lack of eurocentrism among americans
brazilians are a lot more euro wannabe than americans, therefore i can tell from miles away that you're a bahiana trying to bull people into thinking that bahia (kinda crappy place despite the nice culture), is an amazing replica of portugal, when the african heritage is more evident there, and with the hottest people in the world, when bahia is macacoland, if you love bahians so much , go to west africa!!! there are plenty of those.

and last but not least, eastern europe blows brazil off the water when it comes to women, have you ever noticed why donald trump exclusively dates only women from eastern european countries?

Argentinians are europeans lost in south america, they look like italians or spaniards with a touch of french arrogance and a dislike for americans, who they consider trashy, ugly, fat and un-chic.

colombians they were ok, probably next to brazil is the country with the most races and diversity, i could say a smaller version of brazil, with all the admixture and tropical weather and stuff, lots of good looking women, and many of them look like the brazilian women from minas gerais and like mineiros, they are very conservative.

chile, is boring, cold and yes, it looked like a developed country, not really like the typical latin american country, lots of british descent in chile, and some hot chics, but nothing outta this world.

then halle berry is the typical beauty of WHITE AMERICA.

I lived in Brazil 17 years, and in several states, yes, in small german towns in the south, you can see tall jiraffe looking giselle bundchens. (who i find disgusting)

but outside these tiny towns, how many people do you see around the rest of brazil, that look like this???

tell me people wouldnt think giselle is a gringa in rio de janeiro or the north east

brazilians like to white wash brazil, they exagerate numbers of europeans, all in a silly effort to deny the real colors of brazil, and make it look like this lil europe.

I would imagine that each of you (in measure) is partly right and partly wrong. Personally, I think the "my people are better looking than your people" attitude belongs in the school playground.

Anyway, do continue, as it is enjoyable to read examples of such extreme individuality and personal expression being presented.

The Riches of Bahia
written by Guest, 2005-02-22 19:34:50
I have only visited Brazil once and that was the state of Bahia. I instantly fell in love. The beaches, the people, the culture, the warm tropical nights. I can go on and on and on. To the lady who stated she started going to the gym after visiting Brazil, so did I. I have never seen so many gorgeous, physically fit people in my life.

What a state. I couldn't decide if I liked Salvador or Cachoeira. I am a student of African culture and religion and I learned a lot there. We all have our standards of beauty and the Bahians were certainly my idea of beauty. They may not be the blonde Giselle Bundchen type but I saw a lot of Adriana Lima lookalikes. Most of the people were a beautiful mixture of African, European, Indian and God knows what else. Brazil's national treasure is it's beautiful people.

Obrigada Bahia!!!!

So what if the locals don´t dress that way. groping a woman just because she dresses diferently is a cowardly thing to do ( i am a man by the, a real man). Do you think it is right to treat a women badly in the united states because she may be wearing a VEIL?. This double standard disguised as " cultural knowledge" is so patronizing and pathetic. If a woman cannot walk the streets of egypt wearing tanks tops it just shows how ineficient the legal system is there since it alllows for such things and how animalistic men can be in egypt. An arab woman couls sue a guy in the united states if she were mistreated. Sorry to blow your " i am so enlightened and have such respect for other countries" bulls**t viking girl.

I am an American male living in Brazil and I find this discussion hilarious.

External beauty really is subjective, but I think all the readers can agree...its not that all the Americans are so ugly physically..well they are kinda fat, but what makes them ugly is their arrogant behavior. This entire discussion reflects that ugliness well.

To those Americans that are so negitive to Brazil, I say stay home. I am not iterested in see you here anyway. For those that love it, Brazilian people will always be beautiful in every way.

The last reference to vikinggirl girl above is exactly the image of the Ugly American. Arrogant and swaggering. I also am a man - but I don't need to pull out my machismo and call myself "real". Why don't you pull up your zipper and open up your mind?

Groping a woman is wrong wherever it happens. Dressing offensively in a different culture is also wrong. Both reflect ignorance. American culture is not the axis on which the world revolves. If you have trouble with that basic concept, why not stay where you are sitting out there in front of the Citgo station in your bib jeans, chawing your tobaccy, planning who you are going to lynch this coming Friday night, and then marching off to the First Church of the Evangelical Self Righteousness on Sunday to thank God you are not like the rest of us. Poor America
written by Guest, 2005-02-24 11:53:54
Hey Kori,

I can easily understand your discomfort. I have lived in America (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, New York) for a long time. When working, studying or simply traveling around, you find out that there is an awesome proportion of fat and really ugly people here.

America may be a land of everything and everyone, but for the common beautiful woman. There are truly beautiful people here of course, not only in body, but in face and spirit as well, but you have to keep looking for a real long time to find one. The difference is that in Brazil they come in extremely large amounts, and even though their bodies continue to become more and more strikingly attractive, their minds surprise the common American even more! They embody a beautiful harmony of true happiness for life, for true friendship, for learning, for working much harder than Americans use to, and being really appreciated and protected by their loyalty, kindness, family traits, and intelligence (doesnt that is somehow unexpected for a common American, with a lot of misconceptions about South America men?).

Brazilians love life - people and animals. They love to stay healthy, act healthy, eat in a healthy way, love in a psychological healthy way, and treat friends in a healthy supportive way. We do have a healthy spirit my friend! ThatҒs the main difference! We do not teach our young kids to avoid strangers or not even talk to them. We teach them that we shall treat strangers with respect and kindness, we should offer them our help and support when needed, our understanding and kindness when they arrive, many eager to forget their miserable lives with spoiled kids, spouses, and bosses. Many who try hard to stay, for never have to return again.

I have also been in Canada, Vancouver, where I could easily notice beautiful people in face and body, but their minds were a little too insincere or plainly pretentious for me. In Europe there are also beautiful people. They come in much smaller number, but their minds are somehow frightened, troublesome, concerned about too many things. Well, their past generations have suffered due to several wars. It֒s understandable, but hard to live with, and thats why many of them feel fascinated by Brazil and move there.

They are welcome. As a matter of fact, you are all welcome my international friends! Come to see how life can be much more pleasant, enjoyable, with much less money.

Kind regards,

Luiz Cruz

in the USA happiness = buying a goddamned car, and a freaking house and dead boring subruban area, and working your entire life like a freaking slave to pay for it, at the end living pathetically married to a wife or a husband who hardly makes love to you any more, while your kids go to high school and u wanna scream at the top of your lungs, that your sick of it all.

in latin countries happiness = sharing with your family and friends that love for life, dancing with all the people you know and celebrating every single part of life, getting together with your granny and listen to her telling you old stories, getting in your sunday's best to go out to party with your long time friends.

NOTICE THAT THIS IS NOT ONLY A BRAZILIAN QUALITY, AMERICANS HAVE A LOT OF MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT LATIN COUNTRIES, ESPECIALLY ABOUT MEXICO, AND MOST OF THEM HAVE NEVER REALLY COME INTO CONTACT WITH A REAL MEXICAN, BUT WITH MEXICAN-AMERICANS, WHO ARE JUST AS AMERICANS AS THE OTHER AMERICANS.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH MEXICO, BRAZIL, AND COSTA RICA

THESE PLACES ARE WAY HAPPIER PLACES TO LIVE THAN THE USA.
...
written by Guest, 2005-02-24 19:11:29
I've been to both Mexico and Brazil and in both countries family comes first. My most positive experience was sitting in the town square in both Mexico and Brazil on a summer night just visiting with the locals and eating popcorn. People seemed to be content with life and enjoying each other's company.

America may have some material advantages but the lack of warm human contact is abysmal. Rarely do Americans have the time to sit down and just enjoy each other's company. In our rush, rush fast paced country I don't think anyone even knows how to connect with other people anymore.

"Brazilians love life - people and animals."

Well, this explains why so much of them are killed each and everyday or have to live in the streets.

"They love to stay healthy"

Who doesn't?

"act healthy

So it is healthy to spend your leisure time in front of a TV watching stupid telenovelas, go to shopping centers, hang out at beaches just to watch women's asses, eat tons of awful beans and meat at churrascos, drink gallons of beer (of courrse, estupidamnete gelada). Because that's what the vast majority of Brazilians do in their leisure time (and that's why they the population is getting more and more obese!).

"eat in a healthy way

Yeah, lots of sugar and fat!

"love in a psychological healthy way"

If obsessive jealousy is psychologically healthy, then they do.

and treat friends in a healthy supportive way.

Well, I thought that's the way everybody treats his friends. If you have to point that out, there must be something wrong with you. Unless you are aware that there are a lot of "false friends" you can make in Brazil.

We do have a healthy spirit my friend!"

More than that you certainly have an unhealthy big ego paired with a desperate inferiority complex that makes you repeat these "we are the best" mantra until you believe it yourselves.

i agree with italian guy, the typical and rather annoying brazilian claims denote a serious inferiority complex
"we have the most beautiful people in the world"
"we're the best in south america and everything else all those lil countries are s**t (even though most of them are actually better off than us , we just hate admiting it)"
"we're all so beautiful"
" we're the most friendly people on earth"
"we have the hottest women"
"we're the most easygoing"

and it all repeats over and over again, and the poorer, less educated, and dumber the brazilian gets, the more claims like these he/she will make.

lol a brazilian talking about inferiority complex

at least italians dont walk around lying about their heritage and telling people, they're italian descent like lots of brazilians do, so they can look like they're cool, because there is so much post european colonization inferiority complex in brazil that actually brazilians think the most links to europe and the less ties with brazil or with the latin world you have, the closer to royalty you'll get/ that is why here in the USA brazilians are ashamed of being classified as who they really are, LATINOS, and they'll get mad if not called white.

Actually, I'm one of these "terrones" (and, yes, I admit I have Arabic ancestors) and I couldn't care less how one calls me. By the way, that's a nick name used for us only by a a minority in the far northern part of Italy. And it's this minority that thinks of themselves as being Austrians (not Germans!!!). The rest of the Italian population has no desire to be German, Austrian, Brazilian, or whatsoever.
what a lie
written by Guest, 2005-02-25 02:43:11
Italians have no desire to be anything else than italian? What an enormous LIE. Italians long for a northern european fair complexion. Italians are ashamed of the fact that millions of them work as streetcleaners in germany, switzerland etc and hold the most unqualified jobs along with eastern europeans and albanians.
Everything here is upside down. i have never met a people as critical of themselves as the brazilians. To them everything is worse that it actually is even when something is in fact very bad. In brazil they even exagerate the number of people living under the poverty line and who suffer from malnutrition. I sugest you people stop hanging out with drunks on a nationalistic binge and talk to everyday people, the majority of people. You will find that brazilains from all social classes, all races usually actually belittle brazil.
By the way in america people speak of their ancestry so if a brazilain says he is of italian ( i wouldnt say that but anyway) german, japanese etc etxc background maybe its because he or she just wants to inform what her ancestry . if this potrys a negative behavior then what to say about such classifications as italian-american , polish-american, irish-american etc etc.

Firstly I'd like to say that for a traveler the author doesn't show to have much knowledge about visiting other cultures. The first thing you learn is everything is not the way you think it is.
In her article she says that she could never dress as a woman of Rio,as if ALL the girsl from Rio dressed with tight mini skirts and mini tops. Well, some people do,some people don't.
If she doesn't want to call atention, all she would have to wear is a cool jeans and a t-shirt to look like the most of Cariocas. She's based on the image she has of the women of Rio.
Now talking about the beauty of the brazilian people,I can only say that Brazil, like all the countries in this world, has it's share of beautifull and ugly people.

That is one of the Brazilians' big problems: They don't know how to argue, instead they curse each and everyone with the same lame and ridiculous insults. Funny people!

AS if Gisselle Bundchen GETS to be top model OF Brazil. Do you think the brazilian government pressures modeling afencies to hire gisselle bundechen? Perhpas there is an NGO " gisselle for top model of brazil". Or this is a conspiracy by the cia.
Gisselle bunchen is not the super model of brazil she is the highest paid supermodel in the world and she IS brazilian. Nobody GETS to be a supermodel dua to one nations wish. Damn some posts here are just plain retarded.

Yet all the other posts critical of italy seem to be right on the money, completly correct and he of course fails to mention any of them. Which leads to one more characteristc the italians are famous for, "Being escape artists". Basically being irresponsible and unorganized people who do not have the abilities to face up to their problems and solve them. This image of italians is very strong specially in the United States where a major magazine put this on their cover " italians, same old escape artists". This was on the COVER of time or newsweek. Humn, i guess the truth hurts and denial is the path taken by italians when having to face certain things.
